How You Wash Matters
Most people wash their underwear the way they wash everything else. This is the first oversight. The fabric closest to the body’s most sensitive environment requires a different standard: one free from optical brighteners, synthetic fragrance, and harsh alkaline agents that compromise both fabric and pH.
The problem with standard detergents
Conventional laundry detergents are formulated for general fabric care, not intimate contact. They sit at a pH of 9 to 11, leave microscopic residue on fibres, and often contain fragrance compounds and optical brighteners that can cause contact dermatitis when in prolonged contact with sensitive skin. The issue is not a dramatic reaction. It is the slow accumulation of low-level irritation that becomes the baseline.
A better washing routine
- Wash underwear after every single wear, without exception.
- Use a gentle cleanser formulated for delicate or intimate fabrics.
- Rinse thoroughly. Detergent residue is one of the most common and overlooked irritants.
- Avoid fabric softeners on underwear. They coat fibres, reduce breathability, and leave their own residue.
- Do not use excessive heat in the dryer. High temperatures degrade elastic and can damage fabric integrity over time.
- Dry completely before storing. Folding damp underwear into a drawer creates the conditions for microbial growth.
Hand washing vs machine washing
Both are acceptable. Hand washing with a gentle cleanser gives you more control over water temperature and rinse thoroughness. Machine washing on a delicate or cold cycle is efficient and effective provided the detergent is appropriate. The machine does not make the decision; the product does.
Yiah was designed specifically for this. A single wash that cleanses, softens, and disinfects; without the residue that standard detergents leave behind. What you wash with is as important as what you wear.
