The Edit You Probably Haven’t Made
There is a category of self-care that goes largely unexamined: the state of the underwear already in your drawer.
Most people replace underwear when it becomes visibly worn or uncomfortable.
By that point, it has been underperforming for some time.
Signs it is time to replace
Elastic has stretched and the garment no longer holds its shape or fit.
Fabric has thinned noticeably, particularly in the gusset area.
Stains remain after laundering. Persistent staining often indicates that the fabric has absorbed material that washing cannot fully remove.
Odour persists after a full wash cycle. This suggests bacterial or fungal presence that has embedded in degraded fabric.
Seams have frayed or begun to unravel, creating rough edges that can cause friction and irritation.
The fabric feels rough or has lost the softness it had when new.
It no longer fits comfortably: too tight creates friction and restricts airflow;
too loose means the gusset is not positioned correctly.
How often should you replace underwear
A practical benchmark used by many textile and hygiene experts is six to twelve months for frequently worn pieces, assuming they are washed correctly and regularly.
High-use items, meaning those worn multiple times per week, may degrade faster. Lower-use pieces may last longer if stored properly.
The number is less important than the condition. Trust what you observe over what a calendar says.
Making the replacement habit easier
Do a quarterly underwear audit. Set a reminder for the first day of a new season and assess what is in your drawer.
Replace on a rolling basis rather than all at once. When one piece shows signs of wear, replace it.
This avoids the cost and inconvenience of replacing everything simultaneously.
Invest in fewer, better pieces rather than a large collection of lower-quality garments.
Quality fabric and construction last longer and maintain integrity through more wash cycles.
Underwear in contact with the body’s most sensitive environment should meet a minimum standard.
Replacing what no longer meets it is a small act with meaningful implications for comfort and hygiene.
